As we look back on this past year, here are four of the biggest legal stories from 2015:
–A milestone in American history occurred just a few months ago when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that it was unconstitutional for states to refuse gay couples the right to marry. In the case Obergefell v. Hodges, this landmark decision came with a 5-4 ruling requiring all states to legalize gay marriage.
FIFA’s Corruption Scandal
–Seven FIFA officials were arrested on corruption charges, after being charged with bribery, fraud, and money laundering. They are accused of accepting over $150 million in bribes from sporting companies, locations and cities of specific soccer tournaments, and numerous other claims. Most of this story is still unfolding but should create major changes for sports leagues all around the world in the upcoming years.
Bill Cosby’s Downfall Continues
–We are all familiar with the Bill Cosby scandal and some of the details included with the claims. However, a new twist has been added to this story: Bill Cosby is now countersuing some of the women with pending charges against him. He intends to sue them for defamation, damages, claiming they lied for financial gains, and much more.
Escaped Prisoners from Clinton Correctional Facility
–Two inmates from Clinton Correctional Facility were discovered missing on June 6th, 2015. Richard Matt and David Sweat were serving time for murder. Needless to say, this sent the entire country into a panic, as the two men were missing for almost a month. Three weeks after their escape, Matt was shot and killed; and two days later, Sweat was shot and taken into custody.
